Mallory Obenauf IMG_1678-pngIn 2003, a routine physical examination revealed a curvature in kindergartner Mallory Obenauf’s spine. Her doctor suspected scoliosis and referred her family to a specialist. When seen by Dr. Stuart Weinstein at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, Mallory’s spinal curves were already nearing 30 degrees. She was fitted for a brace to slow the progression of her spinal curvature but ultimately spinal fusion surgery was required. Mallory’s surgery was in March 2012 and her curvature had reached 85 degrees. Years later, you would never know Mallory had such a severe case of scoliosis, let alone spinal fusion surgery.

Mallory is a competitive swimmer, a show water skier, snowmobiler, snow skier, flute player, active in her school and church, and a scoliosis patient advocate. In February 2013, Mallory traveled with Dr. Weinstein and several members of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons to Washington, DC’s Research Capitol Hill Days. Mallory’s medical journey and stories of her family support will amaze you. Mallory has authored this book to share her scoliosis journey in order to inspire others who may face similar challenges. By the time you finish reading Mallory’s story, it will become clear why she is called Magnificent Mallory.
