Description

‘Reflections, 50 Years in the 50th State’ is a collection of stories about one man’s life in Hawaii, from 1960 to 2010. Although many chapters describe the unique culture of the islands, this book’s primary purpose is to share how faith in God shapes and transforms us far more than our birthplace or upbringing.

Personally experiencing God’s love, mercy, and divine answers to desperate pleas are far more inspiring than any sunset on Oahu’s North Shore.

Orlando Tumacder hopes readers will not only relate to his personal stories but, like him, find an inner peace that comes through reflection and prayer.

This enjoyable book is a collection of stories about one man’s life in Hawaii, from 1960 to 2010. Although many chapters describe the unique culture of the islands, I think this book’s primary purpose is to share how faith in God shapes and transforms us far more than our birthplace or upbringing. Personally experiencing God’s love, mercy, and divine answers to desperate pleas are far more inspiring than any sunset on Oahu’s North Shore. Orlando Tumacder shares snippets of his early years as a son of Filipino immigrants. Despite his family’s poverty and struggles, his stories will delight you as he captures the innocence of childhood. His younger brother was his best friend; his neighbor, Debbie, was the bane of his existence. He describes the cafeteria food at his elementary school as ‘indescribably delicious’, while his favorite home-cooked meal was Spam and rice.
He tells heartwarming stories of his Uncle Daniel who ‘never had much material-wise. But neither did he have anger, bitterness, or malice toward anyone’. After his mother passes away, he says, ‘even more wondrous is how one person can touch so many others, then leave behind countless memories which never fail to uplift and encourage.’ Each chapter packs an emotional punch. Though many will make you laugh, others will leave you in tears. Tumacder bares his soul as he recalls his father’s infidelity, his near-divorce, and the assault of his teenaged daughter. But every story concludes with a positive message that will touch and inspire every reader. It’s well worth a read!
